I began rewatching LoK last month for the first time since the summer with a fellow AtLA fan/friend of mine. When we hit the rally in “The Revelation” I turned to my friend with a bit of astonishment and said, “This is so clearly mirroring the Cultural Revolution I can hardly stand it.”

A studio art/French double major, she clearly had no idea what I was talking about, even though she decided that nodding along was the best course of action to take in response to my claim. And as we kept watching, I realised that this is why Amon’s propaganda is so successful (even with the fans), and this is why his “revolution” is not meant to be seen as legitimate, either: it’s straight out of Mao Zedong’s (little red) playbook.

As someone who also studies Chinese politics this was a really interesting read.

However you did lose me at “despite our never seeing proof of institutionalised class oppression.” No political representation of non-benders on the council, police crackdowns targeting non-benders and economic functions (industrialisation) usually carried out by all sectors of the population being carried out only by benders. I wish I had the post that lists all the oppression non-benders face because it is rather convincing when you read it, maybe one of my followers has a link? Either way, the idea that Amon stirred up all this sentiment simply through propaganda is disingenuous. Literally one of the first scenes in the show is a group of benders oppressing a shop keeper for money.

Also got to remember that the series is mainly from the POV of Korra, so the audience is only going to get glimpses of the hardships non-benders face. So while I certainly don’t agree with the methods Amon used, I still strongly stand by my position that he does have a valid point.

#also none of this is a comment on the CR #saying amon had a valid point #is not me saying mao had a valid point

well here’s a gif set post link at least

I think this has the list you were talkin’ about.

Anyways, aye, I remember noticing the parallels a while ago, and atla-annotated had several good posts on the matter. Lots of symbolism in the poses, the illustrations, the usage of the the red sun, colors, etc. There’s no way it wasn’t intentional. Tarrlok’s task force seems to reflect a good bit of the Kuomintang Nationalists too, and the fierce struggle between the parties for dominance in China prior to the Great Leap Forward.

I find the parallelism fascinatin’, really. I just wish the story had delved deeper into the subject instead of getting a bit turned around with the romantic entanglements. Either way, great OP post and I agree with avataraang’s commentary too. Lotta informational nuggets to chew on.

I love Spirit World headcanons in LoK, and you guys all know I really love the idea of somebody getting possessed by one of the spirits. I’ve also heard a lot of speculation as to who would get taken over in the Krew, and I figured if anybody in there were, it’d be Korra.

WELP, here’s that spirit world comic i wouldn’t shut up about. And after half a month, it’s finally. DONE. and the more i look at it the more i think this is the worst comic in the history of comics
