Uhm I drew Bolin and Korra just kinda happened?
Borraaaa

You drew “Korra”? Are you sure? Cuz um last time I checked Korra was darker than Bolin & they look the same skin tone in this pic.

Dont call it ‘whitewashing’ for starters, but I thank you for your observation. In fact, I rarely ever colour skintones when sketching, and infact Korra’s is much darker as I only added some small shadows. I then applied a texture and used ‘Soft Light’ which is a lightening blending mode for the sake of the texture pattern itself. Thank you for your comment, it has been duly noted however you dont need to imply I have made her paler for the purpose of offending.

Actually I will keep calling it whitewashing, because it is. Kthx.
And the only way I won’t is if it’s an UNFINISHED work.
Wrt to your art-making process,  adding some brown to Korra’s skin wouldn’t have messed up your work. In fact it would pretty much look the same, only there would be brown in the white spot(s).
And whitewashing isn’t people making somebody lighter for the sake of offending someone. Whitewashing is just making people lighter than they are supposed to be. Whether it’s this art above or a different one. People don’t become offended unless 1. the artist refuses to fix the skin tone after either being asked or made aware of the whitewashing or 2. they see a lot of white washing at one time(like certain tags on Tumblr) or 3. the artist uses excuses for why the character is not their correct skin tone AND refuses to fix it.
And because I feel like being helpful I will give you some links so you could learn about what whitewashing actually is.

Racebendinghas a lot of articles about whitewashing:

Hopefully this is helpful.

Well, no it’s not helpful. I appreciate your research into such a topic, however I am not a whitewasher and I dont need to read posts on it. I am aware of what it is. Maybe it is you who should look into whitewashing, as this is not a case and there is no right of yours to suggest you can tag me as such.

Actually there is, because Korra is whitewashed in that picture up there. And I know plenty about whitewashing, trust, so I don’t need to do anything.

You may have done research into the topic of whitewashing, however you have not done research into me as an artist, and as such your links and tags are highly unfounded and very much unappreciated. You can take all the time in the world to preach to me about your hate topic

“Hate topic”? You serious right now?

, but you have not considered that I am not a whitewasher at all

Maybe I will consider the fact that you’re not a whitewasher if the art wasn’t whitewashed.

, and so I will treat you in the same inconsiderate manner. It seems to me that you decide to spend and waste your time and energy hunting down people who offend you, then comment on their work with an attitude and all this ‘kthnx’ in an attempt to belittle the artist.

First of all, this came across my dash. That’s the only reason why I even commented on it. Second of all, when you see so many whitewashed fanarts of course you’re gonna have an attitude(which I didn’t but whatever.) And I’m NOT belittling you or your art. Did I once said that this picture wasn’t good? Or that you suck as an artist? No. I only said that it’s whitewashed. IF it wasn’t I wouldn’t have had any criticisms of it.

I would take your crit if I was actually purposefully trying to make Korra white.

That’s not all that whitewashing is. Not all whitewashing is purposefully.

However, yes this is a sketch. This is unfinished.

That’s all you had to say was that it was unfinished. I even said I would take it back if it was.

If you had spent more time looking at my other work and making a foundation upon your argument you would also see this is not my finalised rendering style.

Why would I do that? It came across my dash. I considered it whitewashing. I commented on it. That simple.

I dont do lineart unless very rarely, I rarely use one colour and in fact I am a digital painter, not inker.
You could have noticed that Bolin also has white in his skin area, but no, you didn’t notice that either. If I have ‘whitewashed’ Korra then I have most certainly ‘whiter-washed’ Bolin as his skin is not physically white in tone.

Actually no, because Korra is darker than Bolin. So she’s way more likely to whitewashed.

Here are some links to my other Korra fanart where there is no cases of ‘whitewashing’ to prove my point.
Here is a b/w portrait of Korra. I do hope you dont call her ‘Greywashed’(!)

Greywashing doesn’t exist so no I wouldn’t say that, but thanks for the suggestion.

To prove I purposefully made her darker, here is the Bolin to accompany. I am working on a Mako too but he is unfinished.

Okay…

I drew this Korra earlier than that. Note her colours are actually derived straight from screenshots. This is also a rare and exemplary case of why I dont do lineart - I am poor at it.

It looks fine to me. I actually love this one. Is she bending all four elements in it? Or just three?

Here is a Korra painting I did too. You may note her nose is incorrect, I am fixing that. However, you may call her Europeanwashed if you want.

Actually I wouldn’t call it that. I don’t really trip that hard on facial features. I only focus on that sometimes, because some artists aren’t really that good at facial features so if it’s just a nose or ear or eyes or whatever, I don’t really care.

Here is a sticker of Korra and Naga I made.

Cute.

Here is a WIP of Katara and Aang. Note the pale colours and comparitive style to the piece this argument stems from. Other than the fact I took the time to fill in the colours more blockily, this sketch at one point also looked like this. I apply mid/light tones and then add saturated darker tones, it’s how I do my work.

So where is the finished version of this sketch? Because Katara is more brown than yellow.

Here is a sketch of Lin. I did Iroh and Asami in similar style. Because I have drawn them green, red and purple respectively, does that mean I am purposefully going out of my way to change their appearance? No.

Irrelevant. They’re lighter than Korra. It’s not a comparison.

Here is a Muro sketch of Korra. You may replay the animation, too, if you feel you need to look out for any potential cases of whitewashing.

I like this one is it from ep. 7 or 8?

Here is another WIP set. Again, the sketch does render Korra colourless.

I don’t care about the sketch. I care about the finished product. And once again if you would have said in the OP that this was an unfinished work we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.

And here is yet again another WIP painting of Korra in the Avatar State.

I like this!

You also should note that in this sketch NONE of the colours are correct. Perhaps you could have used logic to think ‘Well she obviously hasn’t finished it’ also due to the fact it has a doodle underneath!

First of all, if we’re “using logic” why didn’t you use logic to think “hmm maybe people will think it’s finished. Why don’t I add a comment saying ‘incomplete drawing’ (or whathaveyou) so people won’t think I’m trying to whitewash Korra”?

I hope you realise now that your tagging and labelling of a person is highly incorrect and that in future you should take a step back before judging and swinging around your attitude like you have the right to label someone as offensively so.

I hope that in the future you either a. say that a work is incomplete or b. try not to whitewash, so that you won’t have to have these conversations.
Good day.
