Also interesting is Danny as a bridge between Lacey and Jo. We’re led to believe they haven’t spoken very much in a few years but on the morning when Danny’s returning to school, Lacey approaches Jo. And at this point all their conversations have been about Danny, like they aren’t really able to communicate about anything else because they’ve grown to believe they have nothing in common anymore. Except Danny and their mutual discomfort and uncertainty about his return. And now Lacey and Jo are back in each other’s orbits and looking at each other again and seeing each other as more than someone they used to be friends with.

Right now Danny has scenes with both of them, but Lacey and Jo have very few scenes with each other. The ones they get usually, no matter how well they start off, end in some sort of conflict between the two (actually with the exception of a few danny/jo scenes most of the scenes between the players in the trio have a lot of tension and operate with a kind of fragility WHICH I LOVE). Eventually I suspect Lacey and Jo will start reconnecting though that might not be anytime soon.

This also ties into the many Jo looking kind of distressed whenever Lacey mentions her other friends, like she did when Lacey mentioned how Regina was the best friend she ever had. Obviously Lacey and Jo have seen each other plenty over the years without too much nostalgia or hurt feelings at each of them moving on (and Jo says she doesn’t exactly want to hang out with Lacey and her friends) but now that Danny’s back, the dynamic has changed. With Danny being back there’s potential for them to reunite as a trio (as demonstrated with Lacey driving Jo and Danny home after Regina’s party). So Jo being faced with Lacey’s new friends seems to provide an obstacle to their reuniting (them and of course, Danny’s possible involvement in Regina’s death) because how can Lacey stay with her friends, who mean so much to her, but also fall back in with Jo and Danny?

But Danny as a bridge also becomes troubling to the Lacey/Jo dynamic if/when something romantic occurs between Lacey and Danny. SPOILER ALERT: Maddie Hasson hinted at there being some kind of circular love triangle going on in which Danny is into Lacey, who is trying not to be into Danny, but Jo is going to realize she’s into Danny. As Danny becomes a connector between the two and the catalyst for their reconnection, he might also be a source of trouble for it.
