“I really feel like we need to STOP focusing on getting White folks to understand and just focus on getting other Black folks to understand and see their beauty & power. "What we have here is a classic case of unchecked white Tom Foolery. Because whiteness is so prevalent they can’t see through the bullshit. I want someone to talk about how they decided to mash up Gloria Gaynor and Destiny’s Child. I want someone to look at how they chose to be powerful through singing iconic tracks of black women. I want someone to look at the rest of the Troubletones and see what that means. I want someone to talk about what it means for New Directions, starring a bunch of white men, to win by doing a Michael Jackson/Janet Jackson set list. I want someone to look at what that means for Santana and Mercedes. I want someone to look at those women’s faces when the lights go down and see what I’m seeing. I want someone to talk about what it means for both of them to go back to ND. What they’re swallowing by doing that. What performing really means to them. What love really means to them.
